What the course can involve

Practical maths, with the reasoning made visible.

In NSW, the course is called Mathematics Standard. Related Year 11 courses elsewhere may be called General Mathematics or Mathematics Applications, but state and school requirements differ. Share the student’s state, course and current topic when you enquire so Francis can confirm the fit.

Algebra and linear relationships

Substitute into formulas, rearrange an equation, interpret gradient and intercept, and use straight-line models in practical contexts.

Earning and managing money

Work with wages, percentages, purchasing decisions, budgets and consumer arithmetic using the assumptions supplied in the question.

Measurement and practical problems

Use scale, perimeter, area, volume, time and location, with trigonometry included where it belongs in the student’s course.

Data analysis and networks

Explore samples, displays, centre, spread, box plots and investigations. NSW Mathematics Standard also includes paths, trees and network problems.

How a live lesson can use the platform

Change a value.
Explain what changes.

Francis can place a question in the shared workspace, ask the student to identify what each number means, and build the working together. A graph, equation tool or whiteboard sketch can be added when it helps.

  1. Find the starting point.Begin with the current class topic or an earlier skill that needs another look.
  2. Work and talk together. The student shows a method while Francis questions, explains and gives another example when needed.
  3. Choose the next useful step.Revisit the idea, try a similar problem or move to a more demanding application.

Try a small example

Read a linear cost model

A bike hire has an $18 starting charge plus $6 for each hour. Its cost is modelled by C = 18 + 6h.

Substitute the hire timeC = 18 + 6 × 3
Calculate the totalC = 18 + 6 × 3 = $36.00
Answer$36.00 for 3 hours
18
The fixed starting charge
6
The cost added per hour
h
The number of hire hours

Support shaped around the student

Classwork, foundations or revision.

A lesson can focus on the topic being taught at school, rebuild a prerequisite skill, or practise applying a method in a less familiar question.

Bring the current topic

Share the course, school topic and a question that shows where the difficulty starts.

Use more than one explanation

Move between spoken explanation, written working, a graph or a visual model when that makes the relationship clearer.

Keep the pace responsive

There is room to pause, ask why, correct a step and return to a familiar question before extending it.

For parents and guardians

Start with a short fit check.

Tell us the student’s state, exact course name, current topic and what support would be useful. Francis will discuss the learning needs and available times before any booking is agreed.
